Naples ~ Mt. Vesuvius - Italy

Last winter I stayed for two days in Naples. The first impression I had, it is a busy port city.  Yet surprisingly beautiful.

I stayed at the 'Ibis Style Garibaldi' hotel near the Central Station. Which was a good base. Near a metro station.

And in the city center.

There are a few headlights in the city. Especially in the old city center. A lot of Piazzas, Duomo, Castel Nuovo, Piazza del Plebiscito, the small streets and alleys.

The Castel Sant'Elmo is something you can't skip. It's on a hill. So you will get some great views over the city, coast and the Mt. Vesuvius. Walk up this hill.

When you're walking along the coastline you can get to the Castel dell'Ovo. In this area you will find a lot of restaurants too. On Via Partenope and before entering the Castle on your left.

Naples has 7 subway stations with a particular design,

° IT theme

° Underwater theme

° Furturistic theme

° Ufo theme

° and others

To get from the airport to the city center you can take the bus. It's the easiest way to do this. This bus has two stops, I took the one on the central station.

The easiest way to move around the city is by subway and on foot ! On foot, you discover so many nice alleys and other things. And the subway off course to take the farther distances.

I bought the 'Campania ArteCard' for 3 days. This card allows you to use the public transportation and funicular. There are 3 sights included with this card. And discount to the other sights. You can buy this card for 21€ at the office in the central station.

Restaurants :

Ristorante da Dora  , Via Ferdinando Palasciano 30

L’Antica Pizzaria da Michele , Via Cesare Sersale, 1 / 3

Different restaurant on the dike and the fort

Mt. Vesuvius:

I went for 1 day to the Mt. Vesuvius, a 1.200m high volcano. It's situated around 20km southeast of the city.

To reach this place you can do this by car or by train. I've taken the train and bus. You have to take the 'Circumvesuviana' train to 'Ercolano Scavi'; outside the station on your left you will see an office, where you can buy your bus ticket (organized by them) and entrance to the volcano. It' around 20€ for bus and entrance.

The train ride takes about 20min. The bus ride 30min. When you take the bus, they give you around 2h to discover the mountain from the moment they drop you off at the entrance. Which is enough.
